Rhinoceroses - History
Rhinoceroses (meaning 'nose horn') are the second largest of animals in the world. These primitive-looking mammals date from the Miocene era millions of years ago. Modern Rhinoceroses are the descendants of the Wooly Rhinoceros that had a thick and shaggy fur and inhabited the large range from Siberia to the British Isles. The largest land mammal of all times - Baluchitherium grangeri- lived in Mongolia and died out 15,000 years ago. These Rhinos weighed about 25 tons (four times as much as today's African elephant).

The Rhinoceros has always been hunted for its horn that is used in traditional medicine, ornamental carving, and for ceremonial daggers' hilts in Asia, Middle East and Africa. Rhinoceroses may be the source of the belief in unicorns whose horn was said to be the panacea for all diseases. Since 1970 the population of Rhinoceroses has declined by 90%, all of 5 species are endangered. The world population of Rhinoceroses estimates 10,000-11,000 individuals.
Rhinoceroses - Feeding
White Rhinoceroses feed on the short green grass of savanna, leaves and twigs and their wide mouth and muscular lips are adapted to graze. They spend half a day feeding. Rhinos are able to go 2-4 days without drinking. If necessary, Black Rhinoceroses can dig holes in the ground to find water. All Rhinoceroses like mud and dust baths that provides cooling and protection from insects.
