African White Rhinoceroses are actually gray or yellow-brown; it's a mistaken translation of the Dutch word "wide." They have a hump on the neck, thick, pillar-like legs with wide feet, massive head with wide square mouth, small low-set eyes and strongly serrated cheek teeth and none in front. The Rhino's eyes face sideways, and it has to turn the head to look at anything in front.
African Black Rhinoceroses are odd-ungulates (three toes on each foot); their hide is thick and hairless. Black (or Hooked-lipped) Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) and White (or square-lipped) Rhinoceros (Ceratopherium simum) both have two horns, the longer of which is at the front of the nose and averages 50 cm. The horn is made up of millions of compacted hair-like fibers and isn't connected with the skull, but imbedded in skin. It grows throughout the owner's life. The largest horn measured 1.6 m.
In Asia there are another 3 species of Rhinoceroses:
- Sumatran Rhinoceroses are hairy with the longest horn in back. It is believed to be the only survivor of the lineage that included the Wooly Rhinoceroses;
- Indian one-horned Rhinoceroses with heavy folds of skin;
- Javan one-horned Rhinoceroses, the smallest of all Rhino.
